Ethereum Whale Transfers Clash With Bearish Technical Signals

A significant Ethereum transaction has recently garnered market interest, as 23,528 ETH was transferred from Coinbase Institutional to an unidentified wallet. Whale Alert reports that this transfer was valued at approximately $57.88 million in ETH, indicating a notable transaction from an institutional custody. However, the receiving address remained unidentified, which obscured the ownership of the wallet and the purpose of the transaction. Meanwhile, on the other side, BlackRock reportedly sold approximately $69.68 million worth of ETH, marking another notable institutional development. These developments notably emerged during a period of significant exchange outflows, reflecting contrasting signals regarding Ethereum’s institutional activity.

It is important to highlight that Ethereum’s spot exchange flows have experienced three consecutive weeks of net outflows, thereby prolonging a persistent withdrawal trend. In particular, the recent weekly reading approached -$1.5 billion, indicating substantial withdrawals from trading platforms. Should netflows continue to be negative until the weekly close on 19th October, Ethereum will mark its fourth consecutive week of outflows. These ongoing withdrawals have diminished the supply on exchanges, which may constrain the quantity of ETH available for sale. The decline in exchange balances, however, did not create an inherent increase in demand or ensure a rebound in prices. In contrast, the persistent outflows highlighted a disconnect between ETH’s lacklustre price performance and the dynamics of exchange activity, suggesting a divergence in market direction.

Despite the decline in price, Ethereum derivatives traders largely upheld a bullish stance across prominent trading platforms. According to source, the OI-Weighted Funding Rate for ETH remained positive at 0.0037%, indicating sustained demand for long exposure as longs compensated shorts. Meanwhile, Binance’s leading trader accounts exhibited a significant disparity between bullish and bearish positions. Specifically, long positions constituted 69.78%, while short positions represented 30.22% of the total holdings. The positioning resulted in a Long/Short Ratio of 2.31, indicating that bullish accounts outnumbered bearish accounts. These metrics collectively indicated a sustained bullish stance, despite Ethereum’s inability to achieve a significant price recovery. However, the concentration of long positions has also heightened exposure to potential liquidations should ETH continue its downward trajectory.

Ultimately, the derivatives positioning indicated a more favourable perspective compared to Ethereum’s foundational technical framework. After correcting from the $2,800-resistance area, Ethereum sat at around $2,429. The pullback has driven ETH toward the $2,400 support level, with bulls attempting to avert a prolonged decline. Additionally, the daily chart illustrates the price action’s consistent efforts to establish stability within the existing demand zone, thereby maintaining the integrity of the technical support framework. The Parabolic SAR indicator, however, remained above ETH at $2,638.98, validating the prevailing bearish trend. The MACD indicator has declined to -41.36, positioning itself beneath its Signal line, thereby generating a negative histogram. This confirmed that bearish pressure has persisted in dominating the market. The 2,400-support level will remain crucial since a breakdown below it could expose ETH to another corrective leg. Particularly if the bears persist in exerting their dominance.
