With U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting the potential for military action against Iran, market conditions have experienced significant volatility. Bitcoin experienced a decline, falling below $80,000, while Ethereum also saw a decrease, dropping beneath $2,300. However, traders are dismissing the decline as a “strategic” washout as the weekend approaches. As order books diminish, selling pressure escalates. If high-caps break below key support, this results in a chain reaction leading to the liquidation of long positions. Thus, this could be merely another weekend sell-off. Supporting this, Altcoin Open Interest has decreased by nearly $9 billion from its recent peak, indicating that leverage is being effectively eliminated. Meanwhile, Ethereum approaches a significant whale liquidation zone, maintaining downside risks in consideration. From a technical perspective, the increase in oil prices is contributing to the risk-off sentiment, with Brent crude rallying 2.8% intraday to hit $118 per barrel, its highest level since 2022. This has led to a notable selloff of Bitcoin and Ethereum over the weekend, as diminished liquidity has contributed to heightened negative sentiment.
This has subsequently resulted in a more extensive leverage flush. However, the market does not appear to be factoring in the likelihood of an actual attack. Consequently, Monday may present an unexpected bullish development. With “weekend” volatility flushing out excess leverage, the market may find itself better positioned to stage a relief rally once liquidity returns. Should geopolitical concerns not intensify, Bitcoin and Ethereum may experience a rebound as previously sidelined buyers re-enter the market and bearish positions are unwound. In summary, the narrative surrounding weekend manipulation carries significant implications. However, considering that altcoin open interest has decreased by $9 billion from its recent peaks, the market has already experienced significant deleveraging. The ETH/BTC ratio is at a pivotal juncture. Technically, the ratio is nearing what could be a fifth consecutive lower low.
The prolonged decline has driven the wick back toward the levels observed in early August of 0.28. This level represents a crucial support point, having generated a nearly 15% rally during its previous test. With leveraged positions being squeezed out, is there potential for ETH/BTC to experience a rebound? On the supply side of things, Ethereum is constructing a favourable scenario. As illustrated in the chart below, the validator entry queue has risen by over 11%, resulting in an increase of approximately 140k ETH in the staking queue. Simultaneously, the exit queue has decreased by more than 99%, falling from a peak of 282,000 ETH to merely 3,500 ETH. This indicates that there has been a notable reduction in unstaking pressure. Thus, Ethereum is showing signs of rising conviction despite the broader risk-off market. This is significant given Bitcoin has reached its 60% ceiling and is starting to consolidate.
Macro uncertainties are resurfacing, prompting a more cautious stance among investors regarding BTC. However, with altcoin leverage being diminished in the market, ETH may be positioning itself as a compelling “risk-reward” opportunity. In this configuration, the expanding ETH staking queue appears to exhibit a pattern rather than randomness. Instead, it may indicate preliminary positioning for an August-style ETH/BTC breakout, which would place the ratio in a favourable position for a possible rally in November. This positions Ethereum as a comparatively appealing opportunity for those looking to capitalise on price corrections.
