After maintaining key support around $2250 for two days, sellers of Ethereum regained market control, leading to an acceleration in downward movement. The level represented the final support maintaining the structure following the altcoin’s breach of the range it had occupied since the last week of September. The altcoin experienced a persistent decline before stabilising around the $2400 support level. Bulls subsequently regained momentum, triggering a rebound that pushed prices back above $2500 to $2519. Since then, the upside momentum has stalled near the $2500 mark. Meanwhile, the spot volume has been experiencing a significant decline, with weekly ETF outflows continuing to be elevated at approximately $542 million, indicating that demand remains subdued. Significant liquidations, primarily driven by leveraged long positions, intensified the downward movement.
Therefore, looking ahead, 2,408 remains critical, as another breakdown below that support could expose 2,350–2,400. Conversely, reclaiming $2,560 would indicate an uptick in demand and pave the way for a recovery toward $2,625, which could potentially restore confidence and alleviate downside pressure. In other developments, Ethereum’s price recovery encounters an additional obstacle. According to Alphractal’s derivatives positioning data, there is a noticeable decline in the confidence of major traders. The 30-day and 180-day open interest deltas are both negative, indicating that long-term open interest for leveraged positions is set to decline further. Furthermore, the disparity between institutional investors and retail participants continues to exhibit a negative trend. Therefore, it simply implies that larger investors are exhibiting a reduced tendency toward bearish trading in contrast to retail buyers.
This shift matters because ETH still carries approximately 10.58 million ETH, worth roughly $12.9 billion in total open interest. Consequently, this indicates a considerable degree of potential volatility in the event of an abrupt price movement. That aside, the latest reading indicates a negative delta of approximately 940,000 ETH based on Alphractal data, underscoring the extent of positioning pressure. Consequently, another decline may precipitate further liquidation and heightened selling activity. Conversely, diminished exposure to sell-offs could lead to a reduction in volatility as Ethereum stabilises and traders adopt a more cautious approach to building their positions. Ethereum’s recent sell-off has not deterred all traders from wagering on a recovery. However, Bitfinex’s long positions have surged to nearly $283,405, reflecting a significant increase in optimistic bets for ETH as it attempts to recover.
The concentration of such positioning suggests that certain traders perceive the loss as a buy signal rather than the onset of more significant declines. Nonetheless, the wagers entail considerable risk as both RSI readings have ascended beyond 82, signifying exceptionally extended momentum. If ETH fails to sustain its recovery, these leveraged longs may encounter pressure to exit, which could potentially introduce new selling activity. Conversely, sustained price strength may benefit early buyers and promote additional bullish positioning. The pivotal inquiry is whether genuine demand can sustain this bold wager prior to profit-taking or a reversal that could jeopardise it.
