Ethereum Weighs Privacy Features for Hegotá Upgrade

Ethereum developers are deliberating on whether the blockchain’s forthcoming significant upgrade, Hegotá, ought to facilitate the construction of private transactions without the need for intermediaries. Similar to other blockchains, every Ethereum address is immutable and maintains an ongoing balance, allowing anyone to access the complete history of an address and view its contents. That poses a challenge for payroll, treasury operations, or any entity that prefers to keep its financial information private. Addressing that responsibility has been delegated to applications developed on the Ethereum platform. A package currently under review would shift a portion of the work into the network itself. The centrepiece is Frame Transactions, or Ethereum Improvement Proposal 8141 (EIP-8141), which would allow an account to determine the approval, execution, and payment process of a transaction, rather than imposing a uniform setup on all users. For an ordinary user, this could imply a wallet where transaction fees are subsidised by a third party, multiple actions are consolidated into a single payment, or the cryptographic validation of a transaction is altered without necessitating a transfer to a new account.

Toni Wahrstätter articulated the rationale for it in an X post as developers commenced the process of refining Hegotá’s scope. Private payment systems on Ethereum possess the capability to obscure information through cryptographic proofs. However, the process of integrating those transactions onto the blockchain necessitates additional infrastructure. Certain designs involve routing users through relayers, which are external services that facilitate the submission of transactions on behalf of the users. Frame Transactions is among the 66 proposals currently under consideration for Hegotá, anticipated to succeed this year’s Glamsterdam release and scheduled for delivery in 2027. Developers will now evaluate what they can feasibly construct, test, and launch within the designated timeframe. Two accompanying proposals address the issues that arise when numerous individuals engage in private transactions through a shared account.

Keyed Nonces, or EIP-8250, would enable transactions to utilise distinct counters rather than being queued behind a singular one, thereby preventing a delayed transaction from obstructing subsequent ones. Separately, EIP-8272 would enable a transaction to validate itself against a recent cryptographic record, independent of information that may fluctuate during the waiting period. Together, the three would eliminate certain external infrastructure that privacy applications presently require. Ethereum itself would not transition to a private model, however. Transferring ETH between two standard addresses would remain as transparent as it currently is. The concealment continues to be executed by the applications, which would merely require less external apparatus to accomplish it. Frame Transactions is not assured to be dispatched. While it has been marked as considered for Hegotá, that falls short of approval to progress.

Thus far, only a single modification has received approval, and it pertains to censorship. At present, the entity responsible for assembling a block determines which pending transactions are included, with the discretion to exclude certain ones. The approved change, referred to as FOCIL, enables a consortium of network operators to compile a list of transactions that must be included, thereby removing the decision-making power from any individual builder. Other proposals aim to accelerate the production of blocks, modify the earnings of validators responsible for securing the network, and equip Ethereum to handle cryptography resilient to quantum computing threats. The deadline for new proposals lapsed on August 6. What endures from this point forward will be determined in the upcoming core developer meetings.
