Ethereum remains ensnared in a challenging consolidation phase, characterised by weak liquidity and muted trading activity that hinder any faction from asserting dominance. While ETH is holding near $1.88K, the latest short-term structural break introduces additional downside risk. The daily chart continues to indicate a market experiencing a distinct absence of momentum. ETH is trading around 1.88K, with the price action becoming increasingly choppy and compressed following the recovery from the 1.53K-1.57K support zone. A significant element driving this behaviour seems to be the deficiency of liquidity and trading volume in the market. Neither buyers nor sellers have managed to exert sufficient sustained pressure to create a directional movement, leading to lateral oscillations around the 100-day moving average. This moving average, currently near the $1.9K region, remains an important threshold. ETH has consistently hovered around this level but has not succeeded in achieving a definitive breakout and sustained movement above it. Meanwhile, the broader descending trendline remains in proximity, contributing an additional layer of technical resistance.
Consequently, the market continues to exhibit susceptibility, even in light of the rebound from the lows observed in June. The immediate support zone is situated in the range of $1.80K to $1.84K. A decisive breakdown below this region could shift attention back toward the major $1.53K-$1.57K demand zone. Until volume and liquidity return, however, erratic lateral price movements may continue to prevail. The short-term outlook has worsened in comparison to the prior framework. ETH had been adhering to an ascending trendline established from the early-July lows; however, the most recent price movement has breached this trendline. This breakdown serves as an early bearish signal, especially given that the market has continued to stay below the previous trendline instead of swiftly regaining it. ETH is currently consolidating around $1.88K, with repeated attempts to generate upside momentum proving to be constrained. The 1.80K-1.84K blue demand zone is therefore the most important nearby support.
If selling pressure escalates and this region falters, the breakdown from the ascending structure may evolve into a more significant correction, potentially revealing the next major support in the vicinity of $1.71K-$1.75K. Conversely, the bearish scenario would begin to weaken if ETH reclaims the broken trendline and pushes back toward the $1.95K-$1.98K resistance zone. A breakout above that region would be necessary to establish a more compelling bullish continuation setup. The Spot Average Order Size metric offers an additional signal that conviction might be diminishing. The chart categorises spot activity based on the average size of executed orders, with the green observations indicating larger whale orders and the grey observations denoting more typical-sized activity. Throughout a significant portion of July and the early days of August, green dots were consistently observed as ETH rebounded from around $1.6K to the vicinity of $1.9K, indicating that substantial orders were actively engaged in this upward movement.
More recently, however, these green observations have vanished and been supplanted by grey dots surrounding the current $1.9K price area. This transition indicates a deficiency in definitive directional conviction and a void of the substantial orders that had earlier bolstered the recovery. Notably, a similar shift is observable on the left side of the chart around early May. The green dots vanished, leading to a predominance of grey observations, which preceded a notable decline in ETH’s value. That historical similarity does not guarantee another selloff; however, it lends credence to the cautious technical outlook. In the absence of substantial spot orders, ETH may face challenges in achieving a sustainable breakout unless there is a resurgence in stronger market participation. In conjunction with the breakdown of the 4-hour trendline and the lacklustre daily momentum, the most recent on-chain activity indicates that downside risk should continue to be a significant concern.
